The fiercest rivalry in Australian cricket has a new prize.
Melbourne Derby Enters A New Era With The Launch of the Melbourne Mace
The Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars will today unveil the Melbourne Mace, a new trophy to be contested across all WBBL and BBL Melbourne Derby matches, cementing one of the game’s most enduring rivalries with a symbol designed for the city it represents.
Crafted from cricket’s deepest traditions and reimagined with a modern Melbourne twist, the Melbourne Mace represents authority, supremacy and the right to rule a city that lives and breathes cricket.
With a unique presentation unseen anywhere else in world cricket, the Mace will be immediately run onto the field and handed to the player who hits the winning run or takes the winning wicket. And who better to do the honours than some Melbourne Derby icons from years gone by.
Standing solely at 1.4 metres tall, the Mace simply cannot be missed. Its plinth will light up red for the Renegades and green for the Stars, while the interchangeable head is set to celebrate the city’s champion in real time. Where cups represent history, the Mace points forward; this alliteration is a marker of dominance between two teams who battle for one city’s heart every summer.
For more than 15 years, the Melbourne Derby has delivered moments that have shaped the Big Bash narrative — from Shane Warne and Marlon Samuels’ unforgettable confrontation at the MCG, to Adam Zampa’s attempted Mankad that lit up the cricketing world, to Glenn Maxwell’s incredible hitting at Marvel Stadium last season, to the Renegades’ ultimate triumph over the Stars in BBL|08.
The Melbourne Mace now gives those two clubs and memorable moments a permanent prize.
Melbourne Renegades General Manager James Rosengarten said the Mace captured the essence of both the rivalry and the city.
“The rivalry between the Renegades and Stars has always been the biggest in the Big Bash. It’s produced incredible moments over the years, games that still get talked about now,” Rosengarten said.
“We’re on the edge and the intensity is fever pitch every time we meet. These matches always mean something extra. The Melbourne Mace fits the scale of the occasion when these two teams go head-to-head in Melbourne. We can’t wait for both Jan 4 and Jan 10."
More than just a trophy, the Melbourne Mace is designed to elevate the city’s sporting divide. In a city known for its tribal sporting culture, neutrality is no longer an option with each Melbourne Derby across the Weber WBBL and KFC BBL now carrying added significance.
The Melbourne Mace will be contested for the first time when the two sides meet at the MCG on 4 January before a return bout at Marvel Stadium on 10 January.
