Cross-town rivals the Melbourne Stars have taken the bragging rights in the Derby, with a nail-biting final ball, 4-run victory over the Renegades at the CitiPower Centre on Sunday afternoon.
Stars win final ball battle in the Derby
Here are the key moments from the Renegades' WBBL Home Derby against the Stars:
The Lanning Effect
Meg Lanning batted the full 20 overs, and whilst she was only afforded 49 balls at the strikers end for the entire innings, she still amassed 67 not out. The Stars' total of 5-144 ended up to be (just) enough.
Crucial Partnership
The Renegades opted for a new opening partnership team, but lost Emma De Broughe first ball off the bowling of Kim Garth. Thankfully, Harmanpreet Kaur joined Tammy Beaumont in the middle, and together they put together a 63 run partnership to get the Renegades off to strong start. Beaumont departed for 33 with the Renegades 2-64.
Hayley Matthews Power
Chasing a mid-range total, the Renegades' chase was in the balance at 3-85. Enter Captain Hayley Matthews, who smacked 32 off just 22 deliveries, striking at 145 to get the Gades up to 5-125. Ultimately, it wasn't enough however, with the Stars taking late wickets to secure victory on the final ball.
