The Melbourne Renegades have secured one of the world’s premier T20 batters, selecting Pakistan white-ball captain Muhammad Rizwan with Pick 3 in the BBL|15 Overseas Player Draft.
Renegades land world class keeper-batter Muhammad Rizwan
A consistent force at the top of the order, Rizwan brings a wealth of experience and elite skillset to the Renegades and will play a crucial role within a top order already stacked with firepower.
Regarded as one of the most dependable T20 openers in the world, Rizwan has amassed 3414 runs on the international stage - the second-most T20I runs ever for Pakistan - with an average of 47.41 and 125.37 strike rate.
This decorated short-form career includes 30 half-centuries and a century. He was also awarded the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year in 2021.
Rizwan has made his mark in T20 leagues around the world, most significantly with the Multan Sultans in his home tournament the Pakistan Super League, where he’s captained the side since 2021, guiding them to four straight finals and a historic title in his very first season in charge.
“Truly thankful to be joining the Melbourne Renegades," he said.
"Their passion and purpose stand out in every game. It means a lot to be part of this journey. I'm ready to give my best, together, we chase excellence, on and off the field.”
Speaking from within the Big Bash Draft Room, Renegades General Manager James Rosengarten said Rizwan’s arrival was a major boost for the club.
“To bring in a player of Muhammad Rizwan's calibre at Pick 3 is a massive win for us,” Rosengarten said.
“He’s one of the best in the world. He's reliable, experienced, and brings a really calm presence on and off the field. He’s led teams with success and will complement our squad we’re building.
“What makes Rizwan so valuable is the way he can steady an innings but still keep the scoreboard ticking over. With guys like Jake Fraser-McGurk, Josh Brown and Tim Seifert around him, we think our top order will be right up there as one of the most exciting in the comp.
“Rizwan is also a world-class keeper, which gives us flexibility with the gloves given we've also got Tim. They'll both bring a lot of energy in the field.”
Rizwan was among a cohort if Pakistan internationals available for selection and who will make their Big Bash berths courtesy of a Pakistan’s favourable international schedule.
Rizwan's compatriots Shaheen Afridi, who was selected by the Brisbane Heat with the opening pick, and Babar Azam, who was pre-signed by the Sydney Sixers, will also be calling Australia home this summer.
With the full BBL|15 schedule a few weeks away, fans can already lock in the Gades' clashes with the Heat and Sixers as must watch.
A full draft wrap will be available at the conclusion of the draft.
