Rimmo blogs on moving to the Renegades

07 December 2012

Hi everyone and welcome to my first blog for the Melbourne Renegades.

With the first ball of the BIG Melbourne derby only hours away all the boys are starting to get pumped.  Firstly though, I’d like to fill you all in on how I became a Renegade. It’s the question I have been asked the most throughout the off-season.

It started with a call from Helmo asking if I’d be interested in making the move to Melbourne over Christmas. At first I thought it would be hard to leave a pretty successful team in the Scorchers last year but the more I thought about it the more attractive the move to the Renegades became.

There are a number of reasons why I decided to join the Renegades. One of them was the opportunity to challenge my game. Playing at a different home ground and under different conditions is a great way to test my bowling and keep making improvements in my game. It is important to be able to produce your best bowling no matter where you are and for me the opportunity to play in Melbourne gives me the chance to step aside from the bouncy WACA pitch and put my skills to use on the Etihad drop in pitches.

Another reason for coming across is I admire the intensity Melbourne fans produce when they support their sporting teams. This was demonstrated during the week when hundreds of fans  braved the cold to attend a couple of practice games at Geelong. You are a passionate bunch and I am looking forward to meeting all of our VIP members at tomorrow’s cocktail party and our smaller fans on Sunday at the Family Fan Day. Don’t let the beard scare you, come over and say hi!

This week I have been able to enjoy the company of my new team mates. So far we have gelled well and there will be plenty more stories about the boys to share in the coming weeks. One that I would like to share is my first experience ever seeing the great man that is Murali.

I was a 12 year old boy at my first Boxing Day Test, Australia was playing Sri Lanka and I remember thinking this guy bowls so much differently to anything I’d ever seen and I would love to meet him and learn a few things. Who would have thought 18 years later I would be sharing a dressing room with him and wearing the same team colours? This story is a testament that living, breathing and playing cricket can take you from the stands to the pitch, and even to playing alongside your childhood heroes.

This week has been a busy one and it has been good to knock over all the formalities. We have all had our fair share of media commitments and time in the middle. Everyone is now looking forward to playing some cricket.

Tonight is our opening game against the Stars and it is safe to say that this is a huge game for us. I am very excited for tonight’s match and I can’t wait to take the park. I hope everyone enjoys their night out at Etihad Stadium and hopefully you will be witnessing a Renegades victory – we will be trying out best.
