Renegades suffer defeat against Stars

20 January 2019

The Melbourne Renegades have gone down to the Melbourne Stars at Marvel Stadium by six wickets.

The Snapshot: After losing the bat flip the Renegades would bat first for the first time in BBL08. Openers Marcus Harris and skipper Aaron Finch showed their intent early, striking 12 runs off the first over. Harris would be dismissed for 15 at the end of the third over with the score at 30. Finch went in the next over, followed by Sam Harper just two balls later. The fourth wicket fell with White gone and the score was 33. This brought together Tom Cooper and Mohammad Nabi, who combined for a partnership of 41 to move the score to 74. Nabi would top score for the innings with 28, whilst Cooper contributed 24. The back end of the innings saw the Renegades bowled out for 121 with three balls remaining.

In reply with the ball, things went exactly how the Renegades would have like with Nabi picking up a wicket in the first over. Kane Richardson would be up the wicket of Peter Handscomb to leave the Stars 2-20(4). It didn’t stop there for Richardson as he executed a run out from the boundary to dismiss Glenn Maxwell, with the score 3-35 in the seventh over. After that a good partnership saw the Stars edge closer to the score and eventually pass it just four wickets down.

The Key Moment: The key moment was the innings of Marcus Stoinis, his 70* was simply the difference between the two sides.

The Key Player: The Key player in the match for the Renegades would be split between Richardson and Nabi for their efforts with the bat and ball respectively. Nabi was the best with the bat during an innings that just didn’t get any momentum. Richardson was mighty impressive with the ball picking up two wickets, and now leads the competition for wickets taken.

Up Next: The Gades will be looking to jump back on the winners list quickly as they take on the Sydney Thunder at Spotless Stadium on January 22.
