West Indian superstar Chris Gayle has signed in red, with the Melbourne Renegades confirming the powerhouse batsman will join the club for BBL|05.
The 35 year-old is ranked sixth on the ICC T20 Player World Rankings and averages an impressive 42.21 in domestic T20 matches, having scored 7345 runs.
The former West Indies Test captain could form the league’s most devastating opening partnership with Renegades captain Aaron Finch.
Gayle said he was ready to entertain the fans in Melbourne.
“It’s exciting to be coming to the Melbourne Renegades in the sporting capital of Australia. I’m looking forward to seeing the fans, getting to know the city a little more and helping the team into the finals in BBL|05,” Gayle said.
“The club has put together a really solid list of players and with a new coach, we’re looking at a big summer at Etihad Stadium.”
Head Coach David Saker said Gayle’s experience and ability to unleash his trademark hitting would be a valuable asset for his new team.
“Chris’s abilities and experience goes without saying. He has tremendous skills both as an explosive T20 batsman but also as that genuine all-rounder you need,” Saker said.
“He’s someone who can inspire the squad, particularly among our batsmen, with his confidence and his ability to back himself and flick the switch when the time is right.”
Melbourne Renegades CEO Stuart Coventry said Gayle’s signing was a boon for Renegades members and fans and the competition.
“This is a massive coup for the club which will really bolster our top order. Everyone knows what Chris is capable of and we wanted to bring that big-hitting excitement to the fans in Melbourne in BBL|05.”
“We set ourselves high expectations on what we want to achieve this season and bringing an international player of Chris’s calibre is a great step in the right direction. We can’t wait to see him in action in red.”
Gayle is scheduled to be available for the full BBL|05 season.
