Test opener Aaron Finch remains Captain of the Renegades, with Tom Cooper (vice-captain) and Dan Christian (deputy vice-captain) appointed as his deputies.
With Finch currently on national duties Cooper will lead the Renegades in the season opener against Perth Scorchers on Thursday night at Marvel Stadium.
A long-time contributor with the Renegades, Cooper is now entering his seventh season with the club and was named Player of the Season after last year’s BBL|07 campaign.
“It’s very exciting, there are a few nerves about but we’ve got plenty of experience throughout the team and I’m really looking forward to it,” Cooper said.
“Finchy’s absence throughout the season will create some opportunities for some younger guys and that’s really exciting too.
“We’re looking forward to playing on Thursday night against Perth Scorchers. They are a quality side and `hopefully this is the game we can knock them off.”
Renegades CEO Stuart Coventry said Cooper was an experienced BBL player with an ingrained understanding of the club and its fans.
“Tom has been a loyal and consistent Renegades player for a number of seasons now and he thoroughly deserves his opportunity to lead the side,” Coventry said.
“He led the way with the bat last season and can do the job with the ball as well. He is a respected player across the competition.
“We’re obviously proud Finchy has been given an opportunity in the national side and we know Tom is ready to step up and will do an excellent job leading the team.
“He’ll have great support from another of our new senior players in Dan Christian who is fresh from another T20 title and brings huge experience in the line-up.”
