Renegades name Champions League squad

04 February 2019

The Melbourne Renegades have named their RIA Money Transfer Champions League squad to compete against the Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars later this month.

The competition is an initiative designed to engage with wider multicultural communities and provides the best local cricketers with an opportunity to represent their country of origin and the Renegades.

The squad was selected based on performances during the Melbourne Renegades Champions League tournament.  Over several weekends, the best local players represented their country of origin.

More than 650 players tried out for the tournament.

Trials were held at Citi Power Centre with 50 players from each team (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and the new Indigenous team) selected to play, before squads were again cut to 16 per team, with each team then playing each other once in a T20 format.

The team of the tournament was then selected to represent the Melbourne Renegades in the Multicultural T20 competition.

Sydney Thunder won the first series in Wagga Wagga before the Renegades took the title last year in Melbourne. The Renegades will be looking to defend their title in Sydney, with this year’s tournament being played in Wollongong on February 25 and 26.
