The Renegades’ title defence will begin in Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Thursday December 19.
City of Greater Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood said he’s expecting a big crowd.
“The Renegades have become a highlight of Geelong’s summer sporting calendar and we’re rapt to be hosting the team’s season opener,” he said.
“I’m sure the people of our region will fill the stands and create a genuine home atmosphere for the defending champions against the Thunder.”

The Renegades return to Marvel Stadium on December 29 against Adelaide Strikers.
The club is scheduled to host five matches at Marvel Stadium – the scene of last season’s BBL Final triumph – including a January 10 blockbuster against cross-town rivals Melbourne Stars.
“Marvel Stadium is excited to welcome back the reigning Champions to their home ground this summer. We’re looking forward to another exciting season of Renegades cricket,” Marvel Stadium CEO Michael Green said.
The Renegades will play a second match in Geelong on January 7. It’s the third consecutive season the club has hosted matches at GMHBA Stadium.
“We are thrilled to welcome the reigning BBL champions, the Melbourne Renegades back to GHMBA Stadium for a third successive year,” Kardinia Park Stadium Trust CEO Gerard Griffin said.
“The Renegades have truly left their mark on Geelong in recent years and I look forward to seeing the Stadium full of red, as local fans once again enjoy all the excitement and action of BBL Cricket.
“GMHBA Stadium is the home of big time cricket in regional Victoria. As well as BBL and WBBL, the Stadium has played host to the Australian, Sri Lankan and West Indian national sides. We look forward to playing a big part in next October’s T20 World Cup showcasing six matches at the Stadium.”
New recruit Shaun Marsh could face his former team mates early in the season with the Renegades set to travel west to take on the Perth Scorchers on December 21.
The new condensed format will see the Renegades play four afternoon matches including a Christmas Eve clash in Hobart against the Hurricanes.
The final match of the home and away season will be played at Marvel Stadium on January 27 with the finals series to commence on January 30.
“We’re fortunate to enjoy great support across two venues and we’re looking forward to seeing the stands packed with Renegades fans this season,” Renegades Coach Andrew McDonald said.
“Our membership and fan base in Geelong is strong and growing quickly, so to open the season at GMHBA Stadium will be a great way to begin our campaign. We’re also looking forward to returning to Marvel Stadium with so many good memories from the final day last season.
“From a playing roster perspective, the signing of Shaun Marsh has bolstered our squad. We’re also really pleased with the depth on our list and that will be important given the schedule is more condensed this season.”
