McDermott Masterclass too good for Gades

29 December 2021

A Ben McDermott masterclass proved too much for the Melbourne Renegades at Marvel Stadium, who went down by 85 runs in their final match of 2021.

Renegades reinforcements arrived in the form of veteran quick Kane Richardson, who returned to the starting line-up after missing the last match through illness.

The Gades got off to a blistering start early, with Hurricanes star batters Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short both out cheaply early on.

The loss of two early wickets meant the Hurricanes had to go into damage control and as a result, were 3/66 at the ten-over mark.

Reece Topley was the chief destroyer with the ball for the men in Red, bowling fabulously for figures of 2/17 off his four overs, including thirteen dot balls.

However, Ben McDermott and Peter Handscomb (24 off 20) combined throughout the middle of the innings to restabilise the Hobart side. McDermott smacked nine sixes and nine fours on his way to 127 off 65 deliveries, his second ton in as many games.

A brutal cameo from Singaporean Tim David (30* off 9) helped the Hurricanes to a total of 5/206.

Set a monumental task for victory, the Gades got off to a fast start through wicket-keeper bat Sam Harper. Small in stature but large in heart, Harps belted 19 runs off the first over as he put together a classy 57 runs off 35 balls.

The Hurricanes struck early with the ball, taking three wickets within the powerplay to put the Renegades on the back foot.

Sandeep Lamichhane (3/32) took two wickets in an over to continue the Hurricanes dominance, dismissing the dangerous Jake Fraser-McGurk for a well compiled 21 off 13.

The Renegades were bowled out for 121 in 15.5 overs and their next opportunity is against the Sydney Sixers on New Year’s Day.
