Gurney was instrumental in the Renegades run to the BBL|08 title capturing ten wickets in the final nine games of the season including 1-20 off four overs in the decider against Melbourne Stars.
"Playing in and winning the Big Bash League in 2018/19 was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my career and a very special time for my young family,” Gurney said.
“We are thrilled to have the chance to return to Melbourne and try to help the Renegades achieve back-to-back titles."
Gurney represented Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League earlier this year and is currently playing for Nottinghamshire in England’s Vitality Blast T20 competition.
The Renegades will begin the BBL|09 season against Sydney Thunder in Geelong on December 19.
