Approximately 1500 people packed in to Merv Hughes Oval for the Melbourne Renegades’ family day on Sunday.

On the field it was the first hit-out for the Renegades as an outfit. With the opening match of BBL|04 on Friday against the Sydney Sixers, blowing all the T20 cobwebs out early was imperative.

As the kids enjoyed the activities, on field it was the Aaron Finch show. Despite the early wickets of Matthew Wade and Callum Ferguson, the Renegades’ skipper was untroubled throughout his innings.

With Ben Rohrer and then Peter Nevill providing the support, Finch cruised to 50 and then hit the turbo button. Three sixes in the 19th over gave the Renegades the momentum to get to a total of 164. Finch and Rohrer put on 41 for the third wicket, followed by a 63-run partnership for the fourth between Finch and Nevill.

Defending a substantial total, the Renegades rotated the bowlers. Matt Short, Nick Winter and Andrew Fekete all were involved in the first three overs, and all up there would be seven bowlers used.

Perhaps the most impressive of the seven was Fawad Ahmed. Introduced into the attack in the ninth over, the leg spinner picked up a wicket with his second delivery. The All Stars struggled against Ahmed, his control a feature during his four overs as he finished with figures of 2/22.

Tight bowling from everyone involved meant the Renegades were never really threatened, eventually cruising to a 37-run victory to send all the fans home happy.
