Black Cap Jesse Ryder goes Renegade

19 June 2014

New Zealand international Jesse Ryder has this morning signed with the Melbourne Renegades for the BBL|04 season.

Ryder, 29, joins a top order featuring Skipper Aaron Finch, Matthew Wade, Callum Ferguson, Tom Cooper and Ben Rohrer.

His domestic T20 strike rate of more than 145 complements his scoring speed at international level - 127.65 per 100 balls - in the game’s shortest format.

Ryder has been granted leave from his domestic club in New Zealand, Otago Volts, to play at Etihad Stadium with the Renegades this summer.

“Respect and appreciation to Otago cricket for their flexibility,” Ryder said from the UK last night.

“I'm stoked and grateful to be taking part in one of the best T20 competitions in the world.

“The Renegades have some class players so I’m looking forward to contributing.”

Ryder’s signing continues the Renegades’ quest to bolster their batting order with T20 specialists after a BBL|03 that fell below the club’s own expectations.

Renegades Coach Simon Helmot said Tom Moody had been instrumental in bringing Ryder to the BBL.

“Tom certainly noted Jesse early as a big hitter and we respect his views as our Director of Cricket,” Helmot said.

“He had no hesitation in nominating Jesse as a ‘must have’ for the Renegades and we’re delighted to welcome him to the Renegades this summer.

“We have a lot of faith in Jesse and I’m sure he’ll quickly become a favourite with his big hitting in BBL|04.”

The Renegades have signed three players during the BBL|04 contract window – Ryder, former Stars 'keeper Matthew Wade and former Strikers favourite son, Callum Ferguson.
