A member of the recent winning World Cup team, Xavier Doherty is a 32 year-old left arm orthodox spinner from Tasmania.
He played for the Hobart Hurricanes for the first four seasons of the KFC T20 Big Bash League and has made the move to the spin-friendly wicket at Etihad Stadium for BBL|05.
Doherty made his Test debut for Australia in 2010 and has claimed an impressive 56 wickets in 66 domestic T20 matches.
Melbourne Renegades Head Coach David Saker said Doherty added experience and depth to the side’s bowling lineup.
“We recognised the need to add a spinner who has played at the top level and Xavier certainly fits that bill. He’s been a regular part of the Australian ODI and T20 sides for several years and has a very good record in BBL matches,” Saker said.
“I’ve known Xavier for a long time – I’ve coached him and played with him when he was starting out in Tasmania. As a team we had good results from the spinners during BBL|04 so we’ll be looking for a repeat of that this season.
