Melbourne Renegades batsman Ben Rohrer is in line to make his international debut after today being named in Australia's 12-player squad for the KFC T20 International against West Indies played in Brisbane next Wednesday.
The 31 year-old transferred to the Renegades from the Sydney Sixers at the start of BBL|02, and relished his move up the order with his new side, finishing the season as the highest-scoring middle-order batsman in the competition with 295 runs at an average of 49.16 and at the brilliant strike-rate of 152.06 per 100 balls.
The left-hander joined the Renegades looking for further opportunities after being used as a lower-order ‘closer’ in the Sixers’ BBL|01 and Champions League wins last year.
“I wanted to see if I was good enough to bat higher and score those bigger runs, 50-plus scores rather than the 30 not outs at the end of an innings,” Rohrer told The Age earlier this year.
“I’ve shown that, which is great.”
Rohrer’s performance combined with his influence off the field led to him captaining the Renegades against his former side at the SCG in the absence of regular captain Aaron Finch.
Finch, recently named BBL|02 Player of the Tournament, was also named in the 12-man squad and has been a mainstay of the Australian T20 and 50 over sides this summer.
The 26 year-old from Colac was this week also named captain of an Australia ‘A’ side to play the England Lions in a five-match series over the next month.
The two batsmen were major contributors to the Renegades finishing top of the table at the end of the BBL|02 regular season following seven wins from their games.
