Melbourne Renegades Captain Aaron Finch has been named player of the KFC T20 Big Bash League season after helping propel his team from second bottom to the minor premiership in the space of a year.

Finch led from the front with his powerful batting in BBL|02, bludgeoning 332 runs at an average of 66.4 and strike rate of 125.75.

His tactical nous on the field has drawn praise from team-mates and coaching staff alike, helping the Renegades finish top-of-the-table with a regular season record of 7-1.

Melbourne Renegades Coach Simon Helmot said Finch was a deserving winner of the award.

“Finchy’s had had an outstanding season [and] done really well at the top of the order,” Helmot said

“He’s really set the tone for most of our batting efforts and his leadership and captaincy over the season has been fantastic. He’s certainly a well-deserved winner of this award.”

Helmot said one of Finch’s key attributes as captain was his ability to capture respect and buy-in from his team-mates.

“He communicates well with his players and people follow him. That’s an important part of being a leader,” he said,

“He has a great understanding of the game, is a good, clear decision-maker and I think he’s quite a positive captain.”

Helmot also backed Finch for another tilt at representing Australia in the shorter formats.

“He’s in very good form at the moment so hopefully he can keep replicating that and getting more opportunities at the Australian level,” he said.

The Melbourne Renegades finished BBL|02 atop the table with seven wins from eight regular season fixtures – five more wins than the team recorded in the inaugural KFC T20 Big Bash League.
