Hi everyone and welcome to the 2nd instalment of my weekly blog. What a week it has been. It actually feels more like a month ago since we took on the Stars.
It was such a great first up win for us and the feeling was so high around the group. It would have been nice to play in the next couple of days while the win was still fresh and everyone was still buoyant.
However, Helmo has reminded us of one of the oldest sporting clichés in the book and that is in reality it is only one win and we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves. This attitude was borne out with some very hard work at training this week.
It would be remiss of me not to mention the derby just a little though. It was a huge night for this team and we were brilliantly led by our skipper.
Finchy spoke before the game about backing ourselves and he definitely showed us how to do it. There were also some other great performances on the night with Benny Rohrer playing the perfect wingman role and Obi and Murali putting the brakes on when the Stars had threatened to take the game away.
Our ‘other’ import Faf du Plessis also made an important contribution. While he admitted he would’ve liked to have scored a few more runs, his run-out of Hodgey - who was smoking them at the time - turned the game on its head.
Another pleasing aspect of the derby was the crowd support. Was great to see so much red in the crowd and hopefully we won over a few of the Stars fans. I know we impressed a few kids.
My wife happened to be sitting near a few Stars fans and one Dad in particular purchased Stars shirts and hats for his 3 boys at the start of the game.
She couldn’t help but laugh when halfway through our innings the boys took them off and told their Dad they didn’t want them; the look on the Dad’s face must have been priceless!
Tonight we take on the Sydney Thunder at ANZ stadium. While they had a first up loss in their derby, they are not a team to be taken lightly. They have some great players across the board and we all know how dangerous Chris Gayle can be.
The bowling group has all been chewing our new import Marlon Samuels’ ear off in the hope of finding out a weakness. Hopefully Marlon can outshine whatever impact Chris has.
We have had great preparation going into this fixture and we all can’t wait to get out there again.
