Muthiah Muralidaran arrived at Tullamarine today flanked by family as he prepared for his Melbourne Renegades debut at Etihad Stadium next Friday 7 December.
Muralidaran will be the leading attraction in the KFC T20 BIG Melbourne derby next week, with his battle against Stars captain Shane Warne dominating the pre-game headlines.
The world’s leading Test wicket-taker this morning predicted that spin would play a big part in winning games this summer.
The Renegades have plenty of tweakers to choose from in Aaron O’Brien, Muralidaran, James Muirhead, Fawad Ahmed and the part-time option of Marlon Samuels.
“If you talk Twenty20 cricket, spinners will do well because in the middle overs they come and cramp the batsmen and take wickets,” he said.
“Everywhere in the world spinners do well … a lot of spinners are playing in this Big Bash so hopefully [they] do well.”
Muralidaran said he expected a tough contest against the Stars next Friday 7 December.
“It’s going to be a big game because they’ve got a lot of stars in the Stars, but still I think Twenty20 is a game that anyone could win on the day - whoever plays well. I think we have a great side and we’ll compete well.”
The world cricket legend changed pace briefly to discuss his interest in Australian Rules football. Muralidaran was introduced to the game during his last trip down under by his Australia-based surgeon David Young.
“Last time when I came [to Australia], Doctor David Young took me to a Bulldogs match and so I got interested in the matches,” he said.
“I saw about five matches and it’s a great game that I love to watch.”
The Renegades will open the KFC T20 Big Bash League season with the BIG Melbourne Derby against the Stars next Friday 7 December.
Spectators on the night will also enjoy a mind-blowing freestyle moto x stunt show. The daredevil Renegades Freestyle Moto X Team has been hand-picked from the world’s best freestyle riders to provide an extreme edge to the season-opening clash at Etihad Stadium.
Featuring riders including Crusty Demons Joel Balchin, Rhys Hillier and Adam Gropey, and Metal Mulisha FMX rider Robbie Adelberg, it promises to be a three-hour adrenalin blast.
