28/11/2012 13:00 PM

The Melbourne Renegades have today finalised their BBL|02 playing list with the signing of South African Faf du Plessis.

Fresh from a match-saving 110* on Test debut for the Proteas, du Plessis will play a single game in the Renegades’ crucial first round BIG Melbourne derby versus the Melbourne Stars on Friday 7 December at Etihad Stadium.

Hard-hitting West Indian Marlon Samuels will replace du Plessis ahead the Renegades’ second round clash with Sydney Thunder. Samuels will play the remainder of the home and away season and finals should the Renegades qualify.

Melbourne Renegades CEO Stuart Coventry said du Plessis was a great pick-up who could not only make runs with the bat, but save them in the field thanks to his agility and sharp eye.

“du Plessis is a classy cricketer and we’re very happy for him to slot in to our top order for the 7 December derby,” Coventry said.

“He showed a lot of character with his match-saving ton for South Africa in the second Test and he’s hitting form at the right time for the Renegades.

“He’s a multi-dimensional cricketer who has shown he can play all forms of the game at the highest level.”

Melbourne Renegades Coach Simon Helmot said du Plessis would be an asset the bat, the ball and in the field.

“Faf’s one of the best fielders in world cricket and an explosive T20 batsman,” Helmot said.

“He’s shown he’s a competitor and he had a good Champion’s League with Chennai. His batting and fielding are what we needed and he can bowl some handy leg-spin as well. He’ll really fit in well for that first game against the Stars on 7 December.”

The signing of du Plessis completes the Renegades’ squad for BBL|02. The Renegades will open the season with the BIG Melbourne Derby against the Stars at Etihad Stadium at 7pm on Friday 7 December.

Spectators on the night will also enjoy a mind-blowing freestyle moto x stunt show during the night. The daredevil Renegades Freestyle Moto X Team has been hand-picked from the world’s best freestyle riders to provide an extreme edge to the season-opening KFC T20 Big Bash League derby.
